Through Hainanese culture, you discover your roots

Amongst the five major Chinese dialect groups in Singapore, the Hainanese is the last to arrive in Singapore. Many jobs and business opportunities were already held by other ethnic groups that came earlier. Therefore, the Hainanese turned to the service sector and seafaring working for foreigners. For example, sailors, waiters, chefs, domestic workers for English families, rubber plantation workers, etc.

Today, there are at least 200 thousand Hainanese among the entire Singaporean Chinese population of 2 million.
