Hainanese Dialect:
How much do you know?
Hainan is a province of immigrants. There have been several waves of immigration in history, impacting the languages significantly in Hainan.
Historically, the Hainanese immigrants chose their settlements based on the language they spoke and its origin. It gradually led to a common and individualized language and dialect, i.e., the Hainan dialect of different accents in different settlements.
Many Hainanese migrated from Wenchang and Qionghai to various areas of Nanyang. The Hainanese dialect was affected by the other languages spoken in the area. Many Singapore Hainanese would work for Westerners in the early years. Under their daily influence, they would pick up the English language and mix some English expressions with their dialect.
Furthermore, as they communicated with the Malay group, they would also use the acquired Malay words and integrate them into the Hainanese dialect. As such, the usage of loanwords characterises the Singapore-style Hainanese dialect.
